Today I tutored Sumayah from Saudi Arabia during her
lunch break! She had a presentation in her next class about social media. I
asked her if I could hear the presentation so she could practice presenting with
someone. Sumayah is in Group 4, so her English is very good, and she just needs
to work on some sentence structure and pronunciation. Her presentation was
excellent and I went over some nit-picky errors with her, and reminded her how
American culture really emphasizes eye contact. Next I helped her with her writing.
We went over an essay she wrote about Walt Disney World, which was really fun
for me because I know everything about it! Sumayah also really loves Disney,
and we geeked out for a little bit. One of the errors the teacher kept pointing
out in her essay was it didn’t need the “Walt” in Walt Disney World. Actually
Disney World is technically not the name of the company – it is officially the “Walt
Disney World Resort.” So Sumayah was technically correct, but I could see what
the teacher was talking about, so I told her to just maybe ask her teacher.
(You can see how much of a nerd I am by this example and how excited I was helping
her correct her essay). We also worked on the difference between similar words –
such as tourism, tourist, and tour – as well as verb tenses. Last, I gave her a
science paragraph with ten sentence errors. She was able to find all ten errors
in about ten minutes. Helping Sumayah understand the minor details is really
important because that’s what’s going to improve her. I really enjoyed my
session with her and I think she made some progress!
Having her practice in front of you must have been really helpful. I also like how you had her correct a paragraph on her own. That is great she recognized all of the errors in that short amount of time!
ReplyDeleteTP6!!! Dang girl...trying to make us all look bad! haha ; )
ReplyDeleteWhat timing and what an appropriate tutor to have been matched up with! A presentation on Disney...seems like a perfect teaching moment : ) I was wondering if perhaps she had been to one of the resorts, so I briefly looked at their website to see where the resorts were located. I had no idea there were so many parks now! Disney is taking over! New Walt Disney World Order aka Mickilluminati!!! ahahahahhahahah
Glad you two had a chance to connect. I am sure that was really inspiring for her to see how interested you were in her presentation : )
lol sorry Stan! I'm just trying to get all the requirements for the 100-hour certificate! ;p And yes, Disney is for real taking over, so much so that a Saudi Arabian mother would write about it, and an American girl would freak out about it, haha ;)
