Today I met with Youyoung, my Korean tutee from the
Leon County Library. Her goal is working towards the TOEFL test that she is
going to take in two months. I looked up the different types of TOEFL tests and
exercises before our meeting. When she arrived at the library, I had her do a
mini-practice TOEFL consisting of Reading, Speaking, and Listening. We ran out
of time for the Writing section, so I asked her to do that at some point before
our next session. She seemed nervous about taking the test after having so
little English practice for so long. I assured her that the test was just to
reacquaint her with the TOEFL format and to see exactly what level she is on
compared to the test. Overall, she scored a fifty percent or less on each
section, which means we have some work to do! Youyoung is very optimistic
though -she kept saying, "I think my English is going to improve now that
I have a tutor again!" I am happy to help her out - being a wife with two
small children, it is hard to make time to practice English. I think having a
tutor who understands that she just can't do a lot of work outside of our
sessions is good for her. However, I still plan on helping her improve her
English as much as I can! Her weakest areas are speaking and listening, and I
hope to use the computers the library has to improve her skills. She is a very
quiet speaker too, so working on some pronunciation would probably help her
confidence. Overall I am very excited to be working with Youyoung and I think
we will be able to make some great improvements in her English!
I love your optimism. It is probably changing her whole outlook on learning English in the bet way possible!
