This afternoon I met up with Ufuk and Ilke, the couple I tutor from Turkey. It is always really refreshing to see them. They brought all of their pictures from their cross country American road trip and told me a little about each photo. I think their favorite place was the Grand Canyon; Ufuk told me he had a spiritual experience when he was there. At our last meeting, I had assigned them each to write a 5 paragraph essay about their trip, but they forget to bring the first drafts. So, I just had them tell me what they wrote about and I answered questions they had about their outlines and the writing process. Next, I had them each read an article from Voice of America (AWESOME resource!) out loud. Ufuk and Ilke always seem to have trouble pronouncing their v's and w's. I had them read the article like we did in class yesterday: pre-reading questions, active reading, post-reading questions, and the vocabulary box. It gave our session some structure and it went really smoothly. Ufuk and Ilke really enjoyed reading this way! For the rest of our session, we talked about their home in Turkey and the plans they have when they return. They are going to have me over to their house for Turkish coffee soon!

Ilke is research assistant for the education department at FSU. In April, she brought me her research paper for me to look over it. It was a great paper and I knew she had worked very hard on it. We edited two different drafts together and then she submitted it. Today she told me that her paper is now going to be published in a journal this fall! I was so proud of her!

  1. Whoa, Turkish coffee sounds awesome! And that's so great about her paper being published. I like how you did the reading like the reading we did in class - it really does provide good structure and learning.
