Tuesday, I finally met with my second tutoring partner, Afaf! We couldn't meet the week before because her son was sick (he's feeling better now!) Afaf and I met in the library and I found out that she was in the speaking class I observed on Monday. She is from Medina in Saudi Arabia and her family came to the US because her husband wants to get his Ph.D in education and she would like to get her master's in education as well, although she doesn't know what she wants to specialize in. Afaf has three sons (ages 8, 5, and 1) and the oldest is in school while the younger two are in daycare. After introducing ourselves, I asked her about what she would like to work on during our tutoring sessions and what her weaknesses are. Afaf says that what she would like to work on is building her vocabulary. Since building vocabulary is more of an individual type task, I tried to think of ways that I could help her. We talked about what she's been doing to work on this, and Afaf told me that she uses index cards as well as other methods. We decided that we were going to read a book together, sort of like a book club and we would write down the words we don't know and look up the definitions and then try to use those words in our everyday conversations. Since she didn't have time to pick out a book this week, we decided to meet next week to do so. I'm looking forward to it!
