Last night, my brother, Alex, and I ate at Chipotle with Evan and his roommate, Curt. We joked about how they chose American names despite being Chinese, as they hoped it would help them meet American students. So far, they admitted, they haven't made very many American friends. It was Evan's first time at Chipotle, and he enjoyed his chicken burrito. As we ate, we saw people parading down the street preparing for/returning from dayglow, and Alex and I had the joy of explaining what dayglow is and how miserable it is. They thought the concept was hilarious and enjoyed laughing at the foolish ways students entertain themselves. I couldn't help but agree. They also confessed that they dislike their majors and dislike their research, but do it so they can get jobs in America which pay lots of money. I think this mentality differs greatly from the vast majority of American students. They have invited Alex and me over for an authentic Chinese dinner, and I look forward to that!

Priorities are often determined by economic necessity. This is an interesting observation indeed.
