This evening I met with Jaewoo and we practiced with his speaking and listening skills again. While we were practicing, we were talking about the tragedy in Colorado, and from there talked about gun laws in Korea and America. Apparently in Korea, the only people who can own guns are those who are in the military or hold positions as cops. Also, even if you do own a gun, you are not allowed to take it home with you. Instead, after you register your gun, you can only use it at a clay shooting range or for hunting, and at all other times, it must be kept locked at the police station. And also, there are only 4 shooting ranges in South Korea. From there we talked about the military and what his experience was like. Apparently now the only required amount of time for men to serve is 18 months, but when Jaewoo was in, it was 2 years. Apparently they don't get paid well. In fact, he said that in the 2 years he was in the military, he only got a pension of 1,000$ and they were only given 1 month for vacation. He said that there was an alternative for Koreans and that they could join the KTUSA, which is basically Korea and US joined together. But it's very competitive and the only people who can get in are those who are very talented in speaking English.
