Today I had lunch with Elvire. We had lunch at Chili's and talked about foods that we like to eat or don't like to eat. Elvire likes everything, which is completely different from me; I'm a very picky eater. I told her that I don't like eating onions, and she looked at me like I was crazy! She asked how I cooked without onions and I explained that I chop them up in very small pieces and it melts when I cook so that I don't actually bite into any onions. Elvire told me that one of her assignments was to go to a supermarket and ask someone for help when she doesn't know a particular word or some food. We talked about the different vegetables and I described them to her so she would know what I'm talking about. Elvire looked at the pictures on the menu to see what looked appetizing and chose to order fajitas. We worked on pronouncing the word and the waitress took our orders and sometimes  she was spoke way too fast, so I would help out Elvire when she looked a little lost. We talked about everything as we ate, from her trip to Panama City last weekend to her family and her future move to Boston. I immediately felt bad when I ask about her family because she got very sad; she misses them very much. I also told her about when I first moved away from my family and how hard it was (then I got a little sad). I tried to cheer her up by telling her that she'll see some of her family in Boston and can visit her friends living in New York. She seemed to cheer up and I was very relieved. I realized that international students have a very difficult time; they are very far away from home in a place that is completely different and forced to use a foreign language. There really isn't anything that can remind them of home. Luckily there is Skype and other students from the same country that they can relate to and rely on!
