Alright guys...here comes another wave of posts (sorry Ramin!)!
Monday (716) I met with my conversation group. Ahmad, Amr, Samer, Soufiane, and Nassar were present. We met in the lounge at CIES. Claire sat with us for a moment and joined the group. She really sparked up an intriguing conversation post-presence. When she left the lounge, one of the gentlemen commented that he thought she was beautiful. Another disagreed (sorry Claire, guess you weren't his "type!"). He who negated ask the other gentleman asked "in what way is she beautiful?" He said she was both "beautiful and smart." These two gentlemen began arguing about Claire's beauty. Samer was going to break up the discussion, but I said "let them work it out, this is good." After all, they were arguing in English, and since they were so passionate about this subject, they were searching hard to find the words to express themselves. The others and I sat by commenting on the conversation. It really provided good subject matter for discussion. Finally when they got to a point in which I thought the argument was no longer making headway, I shared an expression with them commonly used in the English language. I told them that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." Of course, most of them didn't understand that expression, especially the term "beholder," so I explained to them that everyone sees beauty differently. This they understood well.
Ha, that's always funny how freely they speak their mind and opinions, and to watch them lay out their arguments. Not for the sake of arguing, but just to see where their opinions are and how they express them in English.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious!! I am glad I sparked an interesting conversation.
