Friday morning I met up with Ilke at the Leon County Public Library. Ilke is usually accompanied by her husband, Ufuk, but he had an appointment that morning. It was nice to be able to have a one on one session with Ilke because she is more of a lower level English learner compared to her husband, so we were able to go at a slower pace today. We started out like we always do, talking about our week and catching up. I had printed a list of speaking prompts and explained to her how they were to be answered and how much time is given for them on the TOEFL. Because Ilke isn't quite ready to be timed yet, I just asked her a few of the questions and listened; this exercise helped Ilke tremendously. With each question, she improved more and more on her vocabulary and flow and she was able to organize her thoughts better. Ilke was excited because she had never had that much speaking practice before! Next, I explained to Ilke what intensive reading was. I printed out an article along with a few questions I came up with and we answered pre-reading questions, active reading exercises, and post-reaing questions. It was similar to my reading lesson plan I turned in last week, so it was interesting to put it into action. Ilke did such a great job, I was really happy with our lesson!
