I met with Yi-Jhen and we finished the second half of "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," the short story that we started the last time we had met. I found that during the reading, her comprehension had drastically improved since the last time we met, and I think that this is largely attributed to become accustomed to the author's style and having help understanding techniques that American writers utilize in story-telling. I recorded a bit of her reading aloud (which she was thoroughly embarrassed of and made me promise that I wouldn't make her listen to it) so we could work on speaking next week. At the completion of the story, she was incredibly shocked by the ending, and we spent fifteen minutes or so discussing what she thought of the ending and how her expectations were subverted. I look forward to working with Yi-Jhen on speaking next week. If anyone has any advice, I'm welcome to suggestions!

  1. That book sounds interesting! I like the idea of reading a little bit of the same story each session and finishing it later. It's great how you had a discussion about the ending of the book; I'll bet she enjoyed voicing her opinions and expectations. Also, I think recording her while she read aloud was a great idea! I think I will do that with some of my TPs.
