I observed Felicia Ciappetta's 2C reading class. She began the class with a "bell ringer" activity, which I thought was a good way to get students to begin work as they come into class without having to wait for any sort of verbal instruction. They were reading an article about the problem of bottled water use in the United States, an article from Kids National Geographic (which I thought was a great source for this level). The students were to take notes from the article and once time was called, they had to retell the article using their notes. This checked their comprehension and their ability to re-word something they had read based on the few notes they had taken. The students seemed uncomfortable with having me in the class at first, and once Ms. Ciappetta noticed this discomfort, she had me introduce myself and why I was there to quell any tension. While the students were reading, Ms. Ciappetta provided me with a few notes on what the process of reading should involve, and a few places to find materials for students. Overall, she was incredibly kind to me and very informative, and I thoroughly enjoyed observing a class.
