Today I met with Yize for the second time. Since the second meeting we had planned fell through because of an experiment he had to do, I asked about his research. He's a first year Ph.d student, he hasn't taken his quals yet, so he doesn't have a specific focus right now. He's been conducting experiments for his professor. I enjoyed learning about the reproduction process in yeast (the experiment he conducted) and what it means for science. I felt that it would give him some experience explaining topics to someone uninformed about them. If he does teach a lab after his Speaking exam, then he would be used to explaining the scientific process to undergraduate students. We then got onto the topic of animals, where we talked about pets. He's scared of dogs and I told him a story from my childhood about my dog biting me because I was taking him off his leash when he was eating (a very bad idea). We both had fish as pets and he told me a story of a cat in the neighborhood that apparently ate his fish that was in the fish tank :( Then we went over some of the practice leaflets that Maria gave us. Specifically we did the exercise where you have to tell a story from the pictures and the exercise about giving directions from the map. It was a very fun meeting and I was sad that I had to leave because of class.
