Last Friday, I met with Rashed for the second time. During our first meeting, he told me that he wanted to work on speaking and during the week, I tried to think of the different ways that I could tutor him in speaking and listening without making our sessions tedious. The usual listening to a recording and asking questions didn't seem like an idea he would enjoy or would be willing to learn from outside of class. So for our second meeting, I decided on a more communicative approach to see how well it would work. The general area that we worked was using past tense focusing on irregular verbs. For this, I would make statements such as "I went horseback riding when I was younger and I enjoyed it. Have you ever ridden a horse?" during our conversation. This way he would use sentences such as "I have ridden horse" or "I rode horses in Kuwait". He was able to use irregular verbs as well as learn which words to use when speaking about certain things (e.g. one wouldn't say I drive a motorcycle, instead one would use 'ride'). I think that Rashed liked this approach and I believe that it worked well for this particular session.
