This morning I had my last class observation in Mrs. Davis' 1A writing class. It was obvious that today was Monday, because the class was quiet and a little sluggish. The teacher even had the class stand up and wiggle around to wake them up! Three out of the four students were Muslim, so I figured Ramadan was still setting in. Mrs. Davis went over the agenda and reminded the students of their midterm tomorrow which will be a timed (30-40 minutes) 5 paragraph essay. Today the students learned about quotations and coordinating conjunctions. For quotations, Mrs Davis handed out a worksheet and had them mark where the quotations should be in the sentences. The class caught on right away. Then Mrs. Davis wrote out sentences on the board and had each student use a coordinating conjunction to combine the different sentences. After practicing that for a while, she gave the class ten minutes to write 5 sentences, each using a different conjunction. Despite their fatigue, the students did an excellent job!

  1. This shows that not every class is going to be as awake as you will want them to be. Your students will appreciate your efforts to get them going though!

  2. I think this kind of class is one of the most challenging >< ... I have the most trouble with getting students engaged when they don't want to/can't.
