Yesterday after our TEFL class, I met with my tutoring partner, Rashed. He had to write a short essay and he needed a little help. He wrote about his father's life and business. Rashed already wrote his essay, but he wanted to make sure that he used the correct grammar and phrases. I saw this as a good opportunity to practice some of the strategies that we talked about in class a couple weeks ago about students' proofreading and correcting their own work. For example, there was a sentence that he wrote that had the wrong tense. I asked him if this took place in the past or the present to which he replied the past. Then I proceeded to ask if the verb had to be in the past or the present. Rashed quickly found his mistake and corrected the verb. There were some comments that his teacher made on some of his sentences such as to elaborate, when this happened, I would ask him what exactly did he mean and then he would write a sentence to explain himself. I was very impressed with his writing; he used transitions words correctly and the essay was logically ordered. Afterwards, we went out for dinner and talked about Ramadan and how different it will be to fast in Florida. In Kuwait, the work hours are shortened and the sun sets earlier. He made a joke about if I don't hear from him next week to call 911! He's really funny and I learned a lot from him and he learned the word 'delicious' and 'date' referring the to fruit one eats to break their fast when the sun sets, not referring to appointment.
