I met Evan this morning on campus outside of Strozier library. We talked about the major differences between Chinese and American culture, and he confessed that he doesn't like the food in America. He seemed very apologetic to suggest something that may have insulted me, and offered to cook me a traditional Chinese dinner. He also told me that the exchange rate between the dollar and the yuan makes traveling to China incredibly easy for Americans, and he strongly suggests that I do so. He asked what classes I was taking over the summer, and after telling him I was in an American Literature class, he wanted to see something that I was reading. He read the first page of Chopin's "The Awakening" and told me that he didn't think that the language was very difficult. This was a sudden realization that Evan is incredibly gifted in English, and that his troubles with spoken English are probably a result of a lack of practice. I'm going to try to get a hold of him sometime this weekend so we can hang out again.

ReplyDeleteWow, I remember reading "The Awakening" in high school and it wasn't too hard, but was no cup of tea - Evan is impressive!
