This afternoon I met up with my tutoring partner from Palestine, Mahmoud Tarda. Mahmoud is always very kind and eager to learn so it gives me the confidence to tutor him! First, we talked and got the chance to catch up about the past week. He has been busy trying to apply for graduate programs and studying for the GRE. I told him next time we meet he should bring the cover letters and resumes he has been working on so we can revise them together. Then, we did a short multiple choice test where Mahmoud had to choose the correct word in its correct form to complete each sentence. He did very well and got to learn some new vocabulary along the way. Mahmoud wants to work on his pronunciation so I had him read an article about flight attendants aloud where he ran into a few words he had trouble with. For example, the word "aisle" and "hostess". He enjoyed working on it though and wants me to bring more articles similar to that one. For our last activity I had him read a short passage and we practiced some intensive reading exercises. Today's tutoring session was a success and Mahmoud and I are getting along great!
Claire, I'm thrilled that you and Mahmoud have had such great success together. Helping him with his cover letter/resume is a great way to build his English skills as well as help him out with applying to grad school! I see that in the first line you mentioned that he is a conversation partner. Was he assigned as a CP but you have used some time with him in order to tutor him?
ReplyDeleteOh! Whoops, I meant to say tutoring partner!
ReplyDeleteAwesome Claire! I find that it is so inspiring when my tps/cps are so inspired to learn (most of which are). I believe I talked to someone in our group who wants to make a profession out of building resumes for people...was that you?
