Yesterday after I tutored one of my own students, there was another CIES student named David, who was waiting to be tutored, but the plans didn't work out. So since both of our schedules were free, he and I talked and hung out in the CIES lounge room and afterwards we went and played soccer with some other CIES students in the practice field near the stadium. David is from Columbia and we talked mainly about the differences in American and Spanish dating styles, sports and especially-soccer. David and I absolutely love soccer, so we ranted and ranted about our ideal teams and players and positions we had played growing up. I told him the names of the positions in English, like sweeper and midfield which are defense and middle positions. That afternoon when we actually played soccer, I was able to realize how terribly out of shape I am and what happens when you don't touch a soccer ball in 4 years. The other guys who were from Saudi Arabia were annoyingly in shape and extremely in touch with their soccer skills. After a while they were just dribbling around another girl Tina and myself in circles and doing megs (passing the ball right between the opponent's legs) like crazy. After 2 hours on the field, David and I were able to talk more about language learning. His main frustration is that he has so much on his mind, but he doesn't know the right word in English, so he can't say what's on his mind. But actually, he's pretty good at speaking and has a wide vocabulary. Of all the things we talked about, David was really interested in what it was like growing up in America, so he asked me about a lot of details about my childhood like: did I have any siblings? Where did I live? What was it like? What were my parents like? Etc. And what was kind of funny was that when I tried asking him questions about his childhood, he would just say, "I have another question." So, even though the afternoon's events weren't really planned, it was fun.

That sounds like a lot of fun! I am sure they were impressed by your soccer skills :) I think it's great how interested he is in your background. He must feel very comfortable around you.
ReplyDeleteAwesome that you guys got to go out and actually play. I am hoping that I can do that with some of my CPs soon.
