Yesterday afternoon, I met with my second tutee, Michelle Gone. Michelle is from Cote d'Ivoire in West Africa and has only been in the states for two months. She was very shy, but so warm and welcoming! We could only meet for a short amount of time because of her afternoon TOEFL course, but I still enjoyed finally getting to meet her after corresponding all week. It was a challenging introduction not only because we were on somewhat of a time crunch, but also because I had a difficult time understanding her. Judging by her speech and writing (emails, texts, etc.), I feel like she is on more of a beginner level. I was apprehensive at first because I was having such trouble understanding her accent, but it got a bit easier by the time we parted ways. Despite her shyness, I could tell Michelle was dedicated and I feel like she will open up about her strengths and weaknesses as a learner the more time we spend together. I am really looking forward to hearing more about Michelle and her life in Africa and also creating activities to help her enhance her English speaking skills.
