I am a part of the ESOL tutoring program at the Leon County Public Library and have been tutoring a wonderful Turkish couple, Ufuk and Ilke Gencel, since March. Ufuk and Ilke are both research assistants at FSU for tax law and education. We parted ways for about two months because I went to India and they traveled to 27 different states along with Disney World! I reunited with Ufuk today at the library; Ilke could not make it because one of their 5 year-old twins was sick at home. It was great to see Ufuk again and hear all about his travels with his family. I was so proud of the couple because they utilized their English skills to make their way across our enormous country by car and experience different aspects of American culture. After catching up, Ufuk and I reevaluated his goals as an English learner; I wanted to do this in case he came across any challenges during his trip and wanted to work on a specific skill. Ufuk's primary goal continues to be passing the TOEFL. To start the lesson, I printed out TOEFL listening comprehension exercises which consisted of me reading a conversation aloud and Ufuk answering multiple choice questions about them. The level of difficulty increased as I continued the lesson, but Ufuk was a little rusty because of his hiatus from studying. Next, I had him read a persuasive article out loud following with me asking him questions about it. I always write down a list of vocabulary words at the bottom of the page so we can review and discuss them if he has any questions after he reads. He loves keeping a portfolio of all of the articles and exercises we do, so having a list of vocabulary words is helpful. I used the structure of the article (introduction, main points, etc.) as a leeway into his homework. I gave Ufuk a prompt asking him to tell me his favorite place he traveled to and why people should visit there. I typed up an outline format that he could fill out and learn how to organize his thoughts. Next time we meet, we will go over the outline and see how he organized his short persuasive essay.
