I was very surprised when I first met Yi-Jhen. I was anticipating being paired with a boy, so I was first taken aback by meeting a Taiwanese girl. After further conversation, I was then impressed with her ability. She told me that she has difficulty using connectors (although, however, therefore, etc.), but she believes that she is better at understanding spoken English than she is at speaking it. We talked a little about what the transition to Tallahassee has been like and what her further goals are in her learning of English. In the middle of our conversation, she told me that she was amazed with my ability to use so many adjectives and confessed that she is poor with adjectives. So, for a small homework assignment (to get to know her better and to view a sample of her written English), I asked for her to describe her favorite place back in Taiwan in a minimum of five sentences, utilizing at least one connector. I really look forward to meeting with Yi-Jhen again, as she was very funny and very easy to get along with. I have noticed that it is much easier to teach someone if they appear to be eager to hear the information you're providing.

I really like Yi-Jhen! She is my conversation partner and really has pretty good command of the English language all things considering. I know she is brand new to America (she's literally only been here two weeks) so I would suggest American culture-related activities if you get a chance! =)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice! If you're interested, maybe we could get a group together for a restaurant outing or something of the like. I'll bring it up in class today.
