Upon first meeting Evan, it was evident that he was having a difficult time understanding spoken English. He told me that it is very difficult for him to hear English and to speak it, but he can read and write nearly fluently. On the table in front of us was a handout that Ramin had given me, and he said that he was able to read the entire thing and understand. This ability impressed me, and it obviously gave direction for further meetings. He told me that he has been in Tallahassee for almost a year and that he really enjoys being a student at Florida State, but he wishes that his English could improve. I look forward to meeting with him in the future to discuss further how the transition from China to America has been and how he feels about his progress in the English language.

Wow, that's impressive he could understand the whole thing! I think you being his partner will really help his English improve since he will have to use his speaking and listening skills.
ReplyDeleteKeep in mind that the ITAs are very intelligent, and their academic English skills, especially receptively, are very advanced.
ReplyDeleteAn exercise that I am planning to do with one of my tutees to help listening comprehension is to watch an English show with English subtitles. That has always helped me when learning other languages so I am interested to see how they respond to it.
