One of the students I am tutoring is Kosuke Okoshi. He is from Tokyo Japan, and he will be a graduate student in the fall. He went to Jutendo University and during his high school years he lived in a dorm and lived with a baseball player that is now famous in Japan. We talked about a lot of things when we met. Our first meeting was interesting because we met to go to AT&T so that he can change his phone plan and phone. He is very respectful and well mannered, opening doors all of the time, even though he does not have to. After we went to AT&T we sat down to have coffee and talk about what he wants to achieve with regards to tutoring. Since he is going into graduate school, he wants to meet for conversations instead of doing a lot of paperwork. I suggested that we read out loud through an article and then discuss what the article is about; when we meet. Reading out loud is important in my point of view, because it helps with fluency and pronunciation. When one reads out loud they not only have to read but also process what the reading is about. Furthermore, new vocabulary can be learned while browsing through. I will have questions for him on the article that we can discuss together. Furthermore, I will pick some words from the article, tell him the synonym of that word and have him guess what the word in the article is. Hopefully, it will be a success!

Wow, sounds like you found out a lot in a short time! I like your idea about the article, I need to work on reading with one of my partners. Maybe you can have him keep a vocab journal to help retain those new words.
ReplyDeleteI like your observations about reading aloud and pronunciation, as well as aiding fluency. This can also be worked on through reading and listening along with audio/teacher. Keep in mind though that comprehension is often sacrificed as readers are not focusing on meaning, but form.
ReplyDeleteThe vocab journal sounds like a good idea!
ReplyDeleteThat's very true students do focus a lot on reading and not the meaning when they read like this.
