Michelle was the first conversation partner I met. I think she will prove to be my most personally challenging international student. She is from west Africa and is in the very early stages of her education in English. Her accent is heavy and her vocabulary is limited, but I was able to learn that she is 24 years old and has an Uncle who lives in Tallahassee. I think it’s great that she has a built-in support system in Tallahassee, but I want to do my best to encourage Michelle to branch out to different and new experiences and people to help improve her English. I look forward to watching her English develop as we progress farther into the semester.

  1. Michelle is my tutoring partner! I also feel like she will be my most challenging partner because I have trouble with her accent. Michelle seems like a heart worker though. Best of luck!

  2. I also have a conversation partner from West Africa, Elvire! It is a bit hard to understand her accent as well, but I think as we meet our CPs more, we'll be able to get used to it. It's especially hard to understand her accent when speaking to her on the phone. I don't know if you've encountered this problem yet, but I find that I have to listen very carefully, and ask her very nicely to repeat what she said.
