Yesterday I met up with my tutee Jae Woo at Strozier. I was actually a little surprised that none of my tutees knew about Strozier library before I introduced them to it. Neither Jae Woo or Sangwon knew about it, even though Sangwon lives on campus in a dorm. Next week Jaewoo has a slide show that he has to present for his class, so he practiced with me for about an hour, talking about sports between CIES and American students. I did not help him with the actual slide show, but going through it, I saw some words that were being used incorrectly, so I went over the words and asked him if that was the best word for that context. For example, he was saying, "Students like sports because it is an activity." And I would ask, "Is activity the best word for that? What is the definition of activity?" Then we would discuss different words and I would have him choose a better word to fit what he was saying. Strozier closed early, so for another hour, we sat outside and worked on his writing skills and how to write an essay. He wasn't sure about the difference between a journal and an essay, so I clarified the difference for him so when he goes to write either one, he will know what to write. His essay topic was about South Korean Thanksgiving, and while he was writing about the history, food, and in general about it, I was having him talk to me about it too, and actually tell me before he wrote it down. Apparently Thanksgiving in South Korea originated a thousand years ago, and they got the details from the gravestones of their ancestors. And with some of the dishes they prepare for Thanksgiving, like pork, they steam it for 2 days.

I'm a little confused when you said, "and they got the details from the gravestones of their ancestors." What details exactly? Pumpkin pie recipes? Football game schedules? Tofurky alternatives?
ReplyDeleteLol, no they got details about when the actual ceremony took place. For example, they determine when their Thanksgiving is by the lunar calendar. Also, the gravestones of their ancestors told that the Emperor was the first person to host the Thanksgiving and initially it was only for his most loyal subjects (generals, court officials, etc).
