Today was my first tutoring session with the Literacy Volunteers of Leon County ESOL program at the library. My tutee is Youyoung Lee, a young Korean mother whose husband is a doctoral student in Chemistry at Florida State. She was able to meet with me today, but her babysitter cancelled at the last minute, so she brought her one year old daughter named Rachel. It was very interesting and entertaining with Rachel around! Luckily I live in a house that has a three month old, so I did not mind too much. I showed her some pictures of my life and told her that I was a student at Florida State in the TEFL program. She talked about her family, her old job in Korea, and how her husband decided to move their family to America three years ago. Despite being her for a long amount of time, she has not been able to work with an English tutor for over six months because the Literacy Program does not have enough volunteer tutors.  I asked her about her goals in English and she stated she is taking the TOEFL test in two months and would like to work towards that. She is unsure if she will pass the TOEFL because she has not had much practice, but she stated she wants to at least take the test and get a feel for it. She also stated that she is weaker in writing and speaking, but is better at reading. She wants to learn about American culture and would like to go to an American university in the future. I exchanged phone numbers and emails with her, and it looks like I will be working with her twice a week since her schedule with her children is complicated. However, I think she is very thankful to now have a tutor and will try very hard during our tutor sessions. If anyone has any good material suggestions for studying for the TOEFL, please let me know!

  1. The ETS website has some good materials. Also, we have some TOEFL books you can look at here at CIES.

  2. The top floor of the Leon County Public Library has a whole room filled with resources. I am sure if you just went to the volunteer office they could point you in the right direction of some great TOEFL worksheets and exercises. Also, if you get a library card there you can use their online TOEFL practice exams!
