Today I met with my two conversation partners Joyce and Yi-Jhen. They are both from Taiwan, but Joyce is in Group Four and has been here for a year, while Yi-Jhen is in Group Two and is brand new to America. It was very interesting conversing at different levels of English. They used only English around me even though they both spoke the same first language (Chinese) which was good! We decided to go see the Disney-Pixar movie “Brave” at 4:45pm. We all had wanted to see it, so we were all very excited! We met at CIES, and then walked over to my car. We had some good conversations about our day and what we thought the movie would be like. Joyce also interviewed me for a project she’s working on at school, which was fun! We drove to the Governor’s Square Mall and went to the theater. Yi-Jhen and Joyce told me that in Taiwan, when you go to the movies, your ticket determines what seat you sit in. They said they would even order their movie tickets online to make sure they got a good seat! Plus, the movie theater chairs in America are much more comfortable than in Taiwan. Yi-Jhen was taking pictures of everything since she had never been to an American movie theater – she was very impressed by everything! We all enjoyed the movie, but the story was different than what we expected. Plus, I was worried that Yi-Jhen and Joyce would have trouble understanding the movie since the characters have Scottish accents, but they said they didn’t notice the accents at all. There were some parts of the story they didn’t completely understand, which I explained after the movie, but for the most part they understood everything. We talked about which characters we liked and the plot. The main character of the movie is a very independent girl who does not want to get an arranged marriage, and I mentioned how in America there is a lot of individuality and freedom of choice for women. As I was dropping them off at their houses, Joyce mentioned there was a place in Tallahassee where you could eat actual Buffalo, so we decided to meet at a restaurant next week and Joyce would find the restaurant information. I  had a lot fun going to the movies – it was a great American experience for them too!
