This afternoon I met with my tutee Jaewoo for an hour and a half and we focused primarily on speaking and listening. I had him listen to one of the stories from the website Ramin sent us : www.storyofstuff.org. The topic of the story was the difference between bottled water and tap water. So after listening to the story, there were a few new vocabulary words that Jae asked me about from listening to the story, and later we went into a very detailed discussion about the difference in chemical compositions in tap water and bottled water. He also said that in Korea, the people there have very serious bone and joint problems from either too much calcium or not enough in the water. He said that before he came to America, some of his friends actually told him not to drink our water because it has too much calcium in it. Later I also had him read a short article online and then asked him questions about it. At times when he was reading, I got the feeling that he was just reading and not actually understanding what it was that he was actually reading, so I would ask him to explain the article back to me to make sure that he understood. Some of the things he had difficulty with, but for the most part he understood the article and what I was asking him.

  1. Don't drink the water, eh? I'm glad this branched off into discussion about other water/health issues. How was his listening comprehension?

  2. His listening and comprehension were probably a 7 out of 10
