On Monday evening I met up with my first tutee, Mahmoud Tarda. Mahmoud is from Palestine and came to Tallahassee to pass the TOEFL in order to obtain a Masters in Marketing. He is quiet, a bit older than the other students, conservative, and very kind. Mahmoud is passionate about marketing and studying human behavior in terms of consumerism. He has even taught courses, some in English, on international marketing back in Palestine. I had not created a lesson plan for this day because I just wanted to get to know Mahmoud and his strengths and weaknesses as an English learner. Mahmoud wants to work on his listening and comprehension. I suggested that he and I both read articles aloud and discuss them; he liked this idea because he wants to work on his accent as well. He and I took a stroll around campus and talked about his family in Palestine, his experience here, and the cultural differences he has observed. All of his thoughts were positive and it is obvious that he is very dedicated to achieving his goal. Overall, Mahmoud is fantastic and I am really excited to start working with him next Monday!
Sounds like you can find a lot of interesting material around this topic. You might want to look at a TOEFL book here at CIES to become familiar with the test, then find articles, readings and topics around marketing to practice with him.
