I just met with my tutoring partner Rashed. We met at the library and it was very funny at first because we didn't know what the other looked like and it wasn't until we texted that I noticed that he got my text around the same time I sent it! The first half of our meeting was an introducing ourselves and getting to know each other. I'm very happy because this is the first time that I've met an international student that studied my field! Rashed got his BA in Political Science and then got a job working for the Ministry of Finance in Kuwait (how cool is that?!). He works with the Gulf Cooperation Council and we talked about the organization and what they have done and are planning to do. Sorry if I'm going on about it, but I've done a lot of research on the GCC and it was so cool that I heard about the things I've researched first hand. I was able to get a personal perspective of the organization and its work and I felt that all my research actually came to practical use. It's fascinating! He plans on getting his master's degree in International Affairs, which is what I'm getting my master's degree in right now. We talked about the International Affairs master's program at FSU and the two ways of getting the degree. The second half of our meeting, I finally got to the point of asking him what are the things that he needs to work on. He told me that he didn't quite understand personal pronouns which he was working on in class. We went down the list of the different types of pronouns and I asked him to make sentences using them (for the ones he didn't quite understand, I would make several sentences, until he could replicate the pattern using the pronouns). There were some other people in the library so Rashed would make sentences about the people there. He didn't really make many mistakes and he seemed to have gotten personal pronouns down. He told me that he didn't really need help with his CIES work, but that he needs to work on conversing, so I think he'll become another conversation partner. We plan on meeting Friday for coffee and conversation.
