Yesterday I met up with my conversation partner Yi-Jhen from Taiwan. She is brand new to - she’s only been here about two weeks! Hence, she hasn’t gotten to explore the area much. So my friend Lauren and I decided to take her to the beach! We met up at a coffee shop and drove to Bald Eagle Point. On the way there, we asked her if she had ever tried American BBQ, and she said no. So we stopped at a delicious BBQ place called Hamaknockers for lunch, which is where the picture attached was taken. Yi-Jhen got a pulled pork sandwich and tried some southern sweet tea – she seemed to like it a lot! She thought it was funny how the restaurant was decorated with family pictures. We had some good conversations on the way to the beach, and she excitedly said she felt like she was on an American road trip. She was so amazed once we got to the beach – it was a clear, gorgeous day! The beach is very small, and it only had a portable restroom, which she had never seen before, so that was very interesting to her! She also thought the showers for washing off after the beach were really neat too! We stayed at the beach for about an hour and a half. There were a lot of horseshoe crabs, which Yi-Jhen had never seen before. She said that she liked the beach a lot and that it was much cleaner than the beaches in Taiwan. On the way back Yi-Jhen told us that even though she’s from Taiwan, everyone there speaks Chinese and the “Taiwanese” language is the same as Chinese. We also talked about Japanese and Korean cultures, and she was very surprised when I told her I like Korean dramas! At the end of the day I took her home and she gave me some Chinese snacks we didn’t get to eat since we were full from the BBQ. It was fun getting to show Yi-Jhen around and learn about her culture!

  2. I'll bet she was blown away by all of the new things she experienced. It especially is cool how she got to get a glimpse of the "American Road Trip".

  3. Sound like you guys had a lot of fun! I'm glad you guys got to do that without it storming, especially in the afternoon! I wonder why she thought it was odd to have a restaurant decorated with family pictures. Did she mention what diners and restaurants are like in Taiwan?

  4. Yeah, I think she really enjoyed it, she had a big smile on her face when she said the American Road trip quote! And yeah luckily the rain was in Tallahassee and not on the coast! And no, she didn't mention anything about diners and restaurants in Taiwan come to think of it...maybe I'll be able ask her when I meet with her this week.
