Yesterday, I met one of my conversation partners, Mohammed, for the first time. Originally from Kuwait, he has been in America for almost seven months and doesn't foresee returning home for another four years. The thought of moving away from home to a foreign country at such a young age is an incredibly daunting prospect. I'll have to check on him from time to time to ensure that he isn't growing homesick. Initially, I found his accent difficult to understand, but as the conversation progressed, I grew accustomed to his speech patterned and realized that he is very advanced in his English learning. He expressed his wish to better his English, and feels that the classes at CIES aren't challenging enough. I also noticed that he was very funny. Being funny in a foreign language is often difficult to do, so this might attest to his abilities in the language. I look forward to meeting him again and hearing more about how his time in Tallahassee has been.

Yes, you are right. Being away from home, especially when Saudis usually come from a big family and collectivist culture, can be difficult. Glad to hear you are going to be checking in with him.
