This afternoon I met with my tutoring partner Majdi, a really nice guy from Saudi Arabia. I was a bit nervous and unsure of what to expect at first, but his friendly and talkative nature alleviated any anxieties I had. Majdi has been a teacher in Saudi Arabia for the past 5 years, something he seamed to really enjoy. He said he wanted to focus on speaking and listening, which we did for the entire hour. We've already planned to meet twice next week, and he seems very eager to make friends in America (during our first and only meeting he invited me to an Arabic restaurant, Saudi Arabia, a cruise to the Bahamas after the term ends, and said he wants to come to Fort Myers to meet my parents). Tonight, we are going to check out First Friday and quite possibly the musical event of the summer at The Hop Yard.

It seems much easier to tutor someone when they're eager to hear what you say and find you affable, doesn't it? With your other partners (conversation or tutoring) have you experienced anybody who doesn't seem eager to learn English? If so, how have you dealt with this?
ReplyDeleteHa! That bit about meeting your parents made me laugh :)
