This morning I observed Candace Walter's 1B Grammar class. I arrived a
little early so the only person in the room was Candace's TA; it was nice
having another "observer" there. Before class started, Candace wrote
the schedule for the day on the board and a space for new vocabulary words,
which I thought was a great idea. Candace began by reading the list of things
to do on the board and answered any questions anyone had about vocabulary or
homework. She had me introduce myself to the group and I was suddenly very
nervous! The students were given a quiz on previous vocabulary words that they
had ten minutes to complete; some took longer than others so the teacher added
two extra minutes to the timer. The quiz consisted of fill in the blanks and
matching questions. During quiz time, Candace wrote sentences on the board to
prepare for the upcoming lesson. After the class was finished with the quiz,
Candace began reviewing relative pronouns, something they had started
yesterday. They worked as a class to combine a sentence and a clause together
using relative pronouns. Candace did an amazing job of making the students feel
comfortable as well as motivating them. For the last activity the teacher
divided everyone into twos and had each pair work on sentences that were
similar to what they had just done as a class. I paired up with a student
because there were 7 people in the class and I was so impressed with how well
they comprehended the lesson. Overall, I enjoyed my first class observation
because I was able to see a lesson plan in action! I am excited to observe more
classes and see other teaching methods.
