Yesterday I had my second tutoring session with
Yuki. When we met for our first session, he mentioned that he wanted to work in
Sports Marketing in the United States, so I geared our entire lesson towards
sports using writing and vocabulary. As a warm up, I had him list popular
sports in America in English. He enjoyed the exercise and it gave him some
practice in spelling and writing. I then had him do a dictation exercise about
baseball. He was pretty good at getting the key words and subject of each
sentence down, but he still had trouble with articles. I also had him dictate
and answer questions, and he did so flawlessly. Plus, I had him read the
paragraph I had him dictate to me, and this really helped with his
pronunciation. I think I will do that more often. I then gave him a small
paragraph that had ten errors such as wrong capitalization, spelling, or
punctuation. This was a hard exercise for Yuki, and I meant for it to challenge
him. It was good, though, because he was better able to understand punctuation,
especially where quotation marks and commas go when you are quoting someone. We
then took a short break. After the break, we did speed writing. I asked him to
tell me about his favorite sport from Japan, which I knew would be challenging
but fun. He enjoyed writing about Karate, the sport he chose, and even
explained some of the elements to me quickly after the speed writing was. Since
we ran out of time, I told him I would look over and grade his speed writing
this week and that would be the first thing to go over at our next session. I
then gave him a sports vocabulary sheet and asked him to complete it before our
next session. Overall I think this session really helped with his sentence
structure and thinking on the spot. I think he was glad he was learning about
something he enjoys!
I think it's awesome you utilized worksheets and structured exercises, and it's smart to choose subjects Yuki is interested in. You inspire me to try to prepare and structure my tutoring sessions a little more.
ReplyDeleteAw thanks! If you're interested, the website http://www.eslflow.com/ has some great worksheets, which is where I got the sports vocabulary one from. It's a really good resource and helps with structure of the lesson!
