We met with our International Teaching Assistants last week. My ITA conversation partner is Yize. He is a doctoral student majoring in biology. Most of our conversation was basically introducing ourselves and learning a little bit more about each other.Though Yize is a teaching assistant, he only grades papers, and doesn't teach a lab. Yize is from the Henan province in China (in the North). He's been at FSU for about a year now. I asked him about what he wants to do with a Ph.D in biology and he said that he really doesn't know right now, but that he's leaning towards becoming a professor or a researcher. I feel that we have something in common, as we both are pursuing our graduate degrees (though I'm definitely not a doctoral student!) and don't really have a specific idea about what career path we'll fall into after obtaining our respective degrees. We were supposed to meet up a second time last week, but he had to conduct some biology experiment for a professor and couldn't meet up at our designated time. Overall, I can't wait to learn more about Yize and what his research is about and hope that we can find a time that's good for the both of us!

  1. I would consider asking him if his English abilities prevent him from teaching a lab. If this is the case, you could encourage him in his progress to be able to teach a class. Imagine how much gratitude he would feel for being able to finally teach a lab!
