This afternoon was made up of two parts. In the first part, I met up with both of my tutees Jaewoo and Sangwon and brought with me, my DVD collection (or at least a big chunk of it) and had them pick a movie they wanted to watch in the lounge. Sangwon and Jaewoo really wanted and needed practice with their listening skills, so I thought, what better way to get them practicing than getting them something to listen to? And I gave them the selection because I wanted them to choose the difficulty of what they would be listening to. I brought movies that had very strong British accents, like Sherlock Holmes and Hannibal Rising, and moderate ones like The Prestige and The Illusionist and Avatar, where they still had accents but weren't as strong, and then there were easier ones like Disturbia and 300. Also, by giving them a choice in genres, I didn't want them to be bored, so I think it was a good idea giving them a broad selection. Sangwon ended up picking "Disturbia" for us. We watched it the whole way through, and there were only a few times when Sangwon asked the meaning of a word or didn't understand something. At the end of the movie I had a verbal quiz for them for comprehension. I asked what the names of the characters were, what the jobs of the side characters were, which weren't actually shown, but only spoken about, I asked where the side characters said they were from and what events led up to where. Jaewoo had a little more difficulty with it (probably because halfway through, his brother and nephew showed up and was paying more attention to his nephew than the movie). But Sangwon nailed almost every question. After the verbal questionnaire, we took a break, but since Sangwon wanted a little more practice, we continued, which led to part 2 of our afternoon.
