Today I met with Xinwen for the first time in the CIES area. We met in the coffee room but it was too busy so we agreed to go to an empty classroom. We started off with where we were from. Xinwen is from Chengdu, China. I asked Xinwen if it was okay that I ask what her age is. She stopped for a second and answered. I was very surprised when she said 19 because she seems to be very mature for her age. She told me that when she was 18 she decided that she would get her passport and come to study in America. I told her that I admired her ambition to just move somewhere. I would ask Xinwen a question and she would be so excited to answer and tell me a story. She seems very passionate about learning English. Xinwen told me that she wants to travel the world for work. She said that she thinks traveling is one of the best things to do in life and that is a big goal of hers so she wants to study international business. She has only been to some other cities in China and once to Vietnam but she has the desire to see more. I told Xinwen that my family is from Italy and she thought that was nice. She said that she really needs to go to Europe because it’s a culture that she has not experienced yet. She told me a funny story about when she first came to Tallahassee. Her flight landed at the Tallahassee airport and she was surprised when she walked outside. She said that she thought it would be more like China with easily accessible taxis everywhere. She soon realized that wasn’t the case but luckily for her a Chinese lady was picking someone up as well and asked her if she was Chinese and needed help. She said she became friends with the lady and that she helped her find an apartment. I thought that was very nice and I told Xinwen that she was lucky to meet someone like that. Eventually the hour was up but we had talked about a lot of stuff that Xinwen wants to do in life. I look forward to my next meeting with her.
