Yi-Jhen and I met inside of Goldstein library where we worked on a few speaking topics. Prior to meeting her, I had made a series of notecards on which questions were written for her to answer. The questions varied from things like "How often do you wake up in the middle of the night?" to "When is your favorite time to go for a walk?" The questions were straightforward, but I told her that I expected her to give elaborate responses, explaining her answers as thoroughly as she was able. While she was speaking, I wrote down a few errors that were common and we discussed them following the questions. If she got stuck on an answer, or needed help, I found ways to ask questions that would encourage speaking and explanation. In the set, I threw in one "ridiculous" question (If you were a flavor of ice cream, what flavor would you be and why?) which she thought was very funny. Overall, I found that Yi-Jhen has a great command of English speech, but pronunciation is her biggest difficulty. Which leads me to my next lesson...

  1. That's a really good idea for a conversation topic, asking ridiculous questions like "What flavor ice cream would you be and why?" It's a fun topic and people can actually take a fun stance on it, rather than with a serious question like, "Are you in favor of keeping animals in zoos or not?"
