During the lunch hour today, I was getting my students from yesterday to fill out the forms about my teaching lesson. I had completely forgotten about printing them out yesterday. But in the meantime, I ended up staying for the entire lunch hour talking with David about a variety of topics like teaching to movies. Apparently when David was in Colombia, he taught Physics, Chemistry and Math in a private high school! He did that for 3 years and said it was one of the best experiences he had done. He also mentioned that there is a really big difference in American students versus Colombian students in that Colombian's seem to enjoy life and themselves more, like they have more freedom, whereas American students don't seem to like school very much and don't seem to enjoy themselves. It was an interesting discussion. He was also telling me that when he taught, he would have his students form a circle with their desks and he would sit in the circle with them. He said that by doing that, it made it more psychologically comfortable for the students and more one on one, but he said that a down side to that was that the students sometimes got too friendly with that. One day he said that when he was teaching he had his back to the students and one of the girls came up and smacked him on the butt! I told him that if that had happened in America that would be seen as extremely scandalous and dangerous for his job, and he agreed, but at the same time he was explaining that it wasn't a huge deal because their class at the time was really lax. Later we talked about our favorite movies and explained the differences and plots and what was good about a certain movie and what wasn't. One of his favorite movies is Gladiator (also one of mine) and 300. I showed him the trailer for Immortals, which was made by the same producers of 300 and he said he hadn't seen it but would like to. We were also talking about superhero movies and the better ones/ not so great ones. We agreed that the Spiderman series was on the 'not so good' list and that the Batman series was on the 'really good' list. When I told him that I was a Lord of the Rings nerd, he got really excited and asked if I had read the books, which I did. And we also talked about the upcoming prequel that's coming out in December "The Hobbit" and David took the opportunity to quiz me about anything and everything he could think of about the movies. He thought it was funny that I answered his questions before he finished them and that I also got every one of them right. Overall I thought it was interesting how similar our interests are even though we're from completely different cultures.
