Yesterday I met with my two Taiwanese conversation partners Joyce and Yi-jhen. We also invited my ITA, Serena, but she could not come since she was sick. We all ended up seeing the movie "The Lorax" since it was playing (for free!) at the SLC. Yi-jhen and Joyce had been wanting to see this movie, and I had never seen it, so it seemed like a good idea! I ran to the McDonalds drive-thru with Yi-jhen real quick to get some dinner with everyone while we watched the movie. In all honesty I didn't expect much from the movie, but I ended up enjoying it. There were a lot of funny and cute elements. Joyce was laughing the entire time! It was difficult to tell if Yi-jhen liked it because I think the English was harder for her, but the visualization definitely helped. They commented on how colorful everything was in the movie, and I stated "Well, that's Dr. Seuss." Then I realized that they have no idea who Dr. Seuss is! I explained that he is a very famous children's author. In his books, he uses a lot of colors, and make-believe animals and places, such as the town "Thneedville" and the character "The Lorax". I said that "The Lorax" was actually a Dr. Seuss book that was made into the movie we just watched. I explained how most of his animals and towns are bizarre, yet well-loved my many Americans. I recommended The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas as two of his more famous stories, and suggested they look him up on the internet. Joyce seemed especially interested and wanted to watch the movies that were made into books of his. Overall it was a really fun night, and I'm glad I got to introduce them to a famous American author!
