Last Thursday, I met with Yize before class. He has been very busy with research for professors and we hardly have time to meet. He's always in the lab. We were talking about his English and he told me that he has Chinese professors, but that his professors speak with him in English and tell the other students to speak English as well. The only drawback is that no one ever talks in the lab because they are focused with their own research. I asked if he doesn't make small talk and just say hi and how are you to people. Yize says he does and we had a conversation about talking about the weather as a small talk topic and how Florida is always so hot! I asked what he does when he's not researching, and he says that he plays computer games. My brother plays computer games as well, so I talked about how upset my brother gets when I distract him when he plays. Yize says he's like that too. I guess it must be a guy computer gaming thing! Yize's classmate Zhou (I couldn't pronounce her first name, but she says everyone here just calls her Zhou) came into the room and wanted to meet me and talk the three of us had a conversation. She's studies Chemistry and was really fun. She's from the Hubei province so Yize drew a map and we talked about how the map of China looked like a chicken. We talked about how guys are crazy when it comes to video games and about cooking and eating. I suppose those topics are universal! It's just amazing how people are so similar regardless of where they live.

  1. That's interesting that his Chinese professors encourage them to speak. I would think they would want to switch back and forth, especially since they're speaking with advanced topics. What projects are they working on?

That's also really funny that he gets irritated when distracted by someone when playing video games. I'm also a gamer, and when I'm on a really difficult part and pausing isn't a good idea, I also get peeved. It's definitely a gamer thing. You get so divulged in the story and the progress that you're making that when people interrupt, it's like, "NO! My awesome concentration! You ruined it!"
